In today's society we tend to constantly prioritize what is trendy and provides instant gratification ahead of what is healthy for us long term. While we understand and respect everyone's individual decisions, we are here to dutifully inform our readers of the truth. That is why our topic today is gel nails.

Gel nails offer many benefits in terms of practicality for the busy people of our society. Gel nails are advertised to not only look great, but they also last longer and help to keep the nails from breaking. What they won't tell you at the salon, however, is that gel nails can also damage your health.

Here are 3 main gel nail risks you should consider:

  • May Cause Skin Cancer

Karolina Jasko, a Miss USA pageant contestant was diagnosed with fingernail melanoma at 18 years old and her doctor told her it was likely from the UVA lights used to harden the gel nails during a manicure. While the general cancer risk from exposure to UV radiation from the manicure is currently considered to be low, it still poses some level of risk.

  • May Damage the Nail Plate

The nail is porous and needs to breathe. Being constantly covered or scraped and filed may damage the nail plate and possibly cause other problems such as infections or fungus, as well as general weakening and damage to the nail.

  • May Cause Fungi

Without proper maintenance, the gel coating of the nail can start to peel off from the skin and as we go about our daily activities, which often includes handwashing dirty dishes or clothes, water may seep through between the nails and gel gap to create a fungus infection.

These are some of the risks that your gel manicurist may not know or have told you. It is important to inform yourself and others in order to make the choices that are right for each individual.

Thank you for reading this article and we hope that you have the most wonderful day today! Stay healthy and beautiful kind reader.
