Dark Circles—& How to Fix Them

Anyone who works—especially in the medical field—knows how tiring it can get. As the body becomes more and more overworked, it is not uncommon to develop dark circles underneath your eyes. Fatigue however isn't necessarily the sole cause of this phenomenon.

Common Causes of Dark Circles

  • Age

  • Oversleeping

  • Allergies

  • Eye Strain

  • Dehydration

  • Sun Exposure

  • Genetics

  • Fatigue

Treatment

Treating dark circles requires knowledge of its cause. Once you know this, it will be much easier to solve it. However, there are simple techniques that are both safe and effective against the dark circles.

  1. Catch up on Sleep

If you suspect that your dark circles are due to a lack of sleep, then all you need to do is to catch up on it. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep is what is considered a decent amount for most people's needs and is more than enough to improve your dark circles.

  1. Apply Ice

This will often do the trick as the cold temperature has a shrinking effect on the vessels and is associated with reducing swelling or puffiness. For this you may take a hand towel and add ice cubes to it. Fold the towel over the ice cubes and press it lightly underneath your eyes for a few minutes.

  1.  Tea Bag Compress

Because tea has caffeine, it has the capacity to shrink your dilated blood vessels, stimulate blood circulation as well as reduce liquid retention underneath your eyes. For this you will need to soak for 5 minutes in hot water two tea bags (can be green tea or black tea). Then you will put the tea bags in the refrigerator for 20 minutes and then apply them to your eyes for 15 minutes. After this, rinse out your eyes with cool water.

Final Notes

As you may have seen, dark circles can be fixed inexpensively with ingredients you already have in your home. A note for the ladies is that if you are experiencing them often, instead of covering up with make-up, its best to find the cause and give your body what it needs.
